A simple leadership truth from Brené Brown

I recently attended the ACHE Congress on Healthcare Leadership in Houston, where I also completed my recertification as a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE).

It was a powerful few days reconnecting with colleagues, meeting new leaders and reflecting deeply on what it means to lead in today’s environment. But one moment stood out above the rest: hearing Brené Brown speak live.

Like many, I’ve followed her work for years. Her insights on vulnerability, courage, and culture have profoundly shaped my leadership philosophy. But hearing her in person—especially in a room full of healthcare leaders—hit differently.

She reminded us of a simple yet profound truth: leaders are responsible for the emotional climate of their teams. And she offered a deceptively simple tactic that’s stuck with me ever since—the two-word check-in.

Turn two words into real connection

At the start of meetings, Brené asks each person to share two words that describe how they’re showing up that day.

“Exhausted, hopeful.” “Stretched, grateful.” “Focused, energetic.”

It’s a brief moment. But it invites emotional awareness and honesty, and opens the door for empathy and connection. It’s a way for leaders to build a culture of care, without needing a 30-minute conversation every time. And if someone expresses emotions that seem concerning, Brené suggests that you follow up with them after the meeting to ask how you can support them.

Leveraging technology to create a positive emotional climate for your team

Lebra is not just another employee engagement tool. We built it to help leaders take meaningful action—quick, authentic action that strengthens connection and culture without burning themselves out.

Lebra Leadership can enable leaders to:

  • Make sure every employee gets regular, meaningful check-ins.

  • Send quick employee recognitions and capture insights on the go that can deepen connections.

  • Track and nudge follow-up items like when someone shares something like “Overwhelmed, trying.”

  • Surface personal context before your next conversation including recognitions, personal notes and milestones—so every interaction feels informed and personal.

In other words, Lebra can help leaders notice more, remember more and follow through on the moments that matter.

It all comes back to connection

Brené reminded us that leaders shape culture by how they show up. Sometimes that means casting a vision. Sometimes it means making tough decisions. And sometimes, it’s as simple as asking for two words.

At Lebra, we believe those everyday moments are where real leadership lives. We’re here to help you act on them—with presence, empathy and ease.
